Birmingham Citizens Advice Bureau 70th Birthday Celebrations - 13th-16th October
Birmingham CAB will be hosting a variety of themed events to celebrate their 70th Birthday:
Venue: Tysley Bureau, 744-746 Warwick Road, Tyseley, Birmingham, B11 2HG
Theme: Advice
Date: 12th October 2009
Time: 12 midday - 4pm
Advice has changed radically over 70 years. People came to bureau with all manner of different problems. We will be looking at each decade and highlighting the problems that people faced during these times. Many people came to CAB not knowing where to turn and the advice they receive can result in life changing outcomes.
Venue: Handsworth Bureau, 171 Churchill Parade, Birchfield Road, Birmingham B11 1LL
Theme: Soical Policy
Date: 13th October 2009
Time: 12 midday - 4pm
From the outset, advisers were encountering the full spectrum of civilian problems faced by a population at war - issues with rationing, displacement and overcrowding to name just a few. Being nationwide, the Citizens Advice service could spot trends across the country and so provide a legitimate commentary on the merits and flaws of various policies. Just as the need for advice continued after the war, so did the demand for Citizens Advice to contribute evidence to the policy debate. Join us at Handsworth bureau who will be focusing on the social policy work carried out since 1939.
Venue: Northfield Bureau, 734-740 Bristol Road South, Northfield, Birmingham, B31 2NN
Theme: Debt
Date: 14th October 2009
Time: 12 Midday - 4pm
Northfield will be concentrating on the types of debt people face and what they can do about it. Debt is the fastest growing problem for the CAB. Day in, day out, we see the devastating impact of debt on people's lives and the desperation people feel about their situation. Families break up, people lose their homes, and often suffer long-term depression and anxiety as a result of the worry involved. The free, confidential, independent debt advice that we offer can help turn things around and prevent similar problems happening again in the future.
Venue: Kingstanding Bureau, 392-396 Kingstanding Road, Kingstanding, Birmingham, B44 8LD
Theme: Volunteers
Date: 15th October 2009
Time: 12 midday - 4pm
Step back into 1939 when Birmingham Citizens Advice first began and learn how it used to be done. The arrangements for bureaux varied widely. Almost anyone could be involved, one lady described how her husband, a solicitor ineligible for military service came home from his office in London and announced that they were going to open a Citizens Advice Bureau in their front room the next day. Volunteers play an extremely important role and without them CAB would cease to exist.
Venue: City Centre Bureau, 168 Corporation Street, Birmingham, B4 6TF
Theme: Benefits
Date: 16th October 2009
Time: 12 midday - 4pm
